Missed Connection Claim

Missing a connecting flights can cause a lot of distress to passengers as they are neither in the comfort of their departure point or their destination. Being stuck in a country you dont want to be in is likely to cause you both mental and financial pain. Luckily if this happens to you you may be able to claim missed connection compensation from the airline.

There are a couple of criteria you need fulfill in order to claim missed connection compensation. These include:

  • Your ticket was booked under the same reservation number i.e. the ticket is a through ticket and not two flights booked seperately
  • In order to be eligible for missed connection compensation your airline needs to have been at fault either by you being denied boarding or the flight being cancelled or arriving late leaving insufficient time to make your connection.
  • The flight originated from an EU country whether operated by an EU or non-EU airline.

Missed connection entitlements

If you miss your connection your priority is to get to your final destinaton. Speak to an airline representative or at the airline counter explaining the circumstances and let them find you another flight. If there are a lot of passengers in the queue then try and call the airline direct and arrange an alternative flight. Finally you have the right to reject any onward travel and obtain a full refund and a free flight back to your country of origin. If the total delay is greater than 2 hours ask the airline for the following:

1. Food vouchers appropriate to the delay
2. Internet access or access to a phone
3. If its after 6pm the airline must provide hotel accomodation and transfer to and from the hotel.

Even if you are offered a replacement flight, food and hotel accomodation if your journey falls under EU jurisdiction then you are also entitled to compensation.
