Summer skiing: is it worth it, and where should you go?

Summer skiing sounds like a contradiction, skis and sunshine, snow and t-shirts, but it's a real and growing niche for skiers who can't wait until December. A handful of high-altitude glaciers across Switzerland, Austria, France and Italy keep their lifts running through the warmer months, offering a strange but brilliant combination of morning turns and afternoon sunbathing.

So is it actually worth booking? The honest answer is: it depends what you want. This guide covers what summer skiing is really like, where the best summer ski resorts are, and who should, and shouldn't, plan a trip.

What is summer skiing, exactly?

Summer skiing takes place on permanent glaciers sitting above roughly 2,700 metres, where snow survives year-round even as the valleys below bake in the sun. Only a small subset of Europe's winter resorts run summer operations, and the terrain on offer is a fraction of what you'd find in peak season.

Two resorts, Zermatt in Switzerland and Hintertux in Austria, never close at all. The rest run seasonal windows, typically opening in June and winding down between late July and early autumn, with exact dates shifting year to year depending on snowfall.

How summer ski resorts compare to winter

Where a resort like Tignes might offer 300km of pistes in the depths of winter, its summer glacier operation shrinks to around 15km. Runs are mostly blue and red, groomed each morning by piste teams working against the clock before the sun takes hold.

This isn't a smaller version of a winter holiday. It's a genuinely different trip, built around a short daily ski window and a long, warm afternoon.

What is glacier skiing actually like?

The single biggest difference from a winter week is what happens to the snow as the day goes on. First thing in the morning, after an overnight freeze, the surface is firm, fast and genuinely excellent. By mid-morning the sun softens the top layer. By early afternoon, conditions can turn heavy and slushy, which is why nearly every summer glacier resort only runs lifts from around 7am to early afternoon.

Sun protection matters more here than on any winter trip. UV at altitude in July is roughly double the strength at sea level, and the glare bouncing off bright snow is intense. Factor 50 sunscreen, a good lip balm, and high-light goggles aren't optional extras, they're the difference between a great week and a painful one.

Pack for both extremes in one day: a proper layering system for a 6am lift queue that can feel like winter, and shorts and a sun hat for the alpine village by lunchtime.

The best summer ski resorts to consider

●       Zermatt, Switzerland: one of only two truly year-round resorts, with the highest piste in the Alps and a long vertical drop early in the season.

●       Saas-Fee, Switzerland: typically open mid-June to early October, with slightly steeper terrain than nearby Zermatt and a reputation for holding its snow well.

●       Tignes, France: reliable each summer via the Grande Motte glacier, with around 18km of easy to intermediate pistes and quick funicular access.

●       Passo Stelvio, Italy: one of the longer summer seasons, sometimes running from late May into November, with roughly 20km of gentle, wide-open pistes.

Early summer, June and the first half of July, tends to bring the strongest snow across the board. By late August, resorts still open usually have thinner coverage and softer conditions, so booking earlier in the window generally pays off.

What does a typical summer ski day look like?

An early alarm, often 6am or earlier, gets you to the lifts for opening. The first hour on firm, empty pistes is usually the best skiing of the day. By mid-morning the snow softens and crowds thin out. Lifts close between midday and early afternoon, and from there the day flips into a proper summer holiday: swimming, hiking, mountain biking, or a long lunch on a sunny terrace.

It's this split, morning skiing and afternoon everything else, that gives summer ski trips their appeal. The skiing hours are short, but the day rarely feels it.

Is summer skiing worth it? Who it suits (and who it doesn't)

Summer skiing works best for people who already ski and want more of it outside the usual season, freestylers chasing park time in the sun, racers needing training terrain, or keen skiers who simply can't wait for December. It also makes a good dual-purpose trip: a few mornings on snow paired with hiking or biking in an alpine valley.

It's a harder sell for complete beginners. Glacier terrain tends to be steeper than a nursery slope, conditions shift through the morning, and most summer operations run with a fraction of a winter resort's beginner infrastructure. A handful of resorts, notably Hintertux, do run summer ski schools, but a first-ever ski trip is usually smoother in winter.

Overall, summer skiing is worth it if you go in with the right expectations. It isn't a replacement for a peak-season week. What it offers instead is something winter can't: warm weather, long days, quiet glaciers, and the genuinely odd pleasure of skiing in a t-shirt while the rest of Europe is on the beach.
