British Airways passengers encounter cancellations after IT fail

1000's of passengers due to fly out of Heathrow and Gatwick today faced uncertainty when an IT failure resulted in British Airways cancelling 100 flights with delays on many more. The glitch was not just isolated to Heathrow and Gatwick with passengers in Manchester also experiencing delays.

Many passengers have been told to go home if they live close by or go to the closest available hotel as per EU regulations. The airline has been handing out leaflets explaining passenger rights for the cancellations.

What are your rights?

If a flight is cancelled at short notice the airline has a duty of care towards you and must provide the following:

• Food and drinks appropriate for the length of the delay
• Hotel accommodation if the delay is overnight
• Transfers to the hotel

What about compensation?

Passengers affected by the IT glitch at Heathrow are entitled to the following:

• If a flight is cancelled then the airline must find an alternative flight to their end destination. This could be on the next available flight with the airline. Flights can also be via any route and on a flight with an alternative airline where available
• If the passenger decides they don't want to fly they are entitled to a full refund. They are then free to book an alternative flight themselves. Please note that if you accept a full refund then no further "duty of care" by the airline applies.

In addition to this if the flight is delayed for over 3 hours then additional compensation under EU rules applies. The level of compensation depends on the distance between the departure and destination airport.
